Washington seeks alternative to Niger for troop deployment in Africa

The United States is considering alternative options for deploying troops in Africa after Niger rebels broke a military agreement with Washington.

Jack Reed (from the state of Rhode Island), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee of the Congress representing the ruling Democratic Party, said the following, the Report reported, citing TASS.

He expressed these ideas at an online meeting of the Washington-based Defence Writers Group: “When it comes to our military, they always try to calculate actions in advance, and we began to receive signals from Niger months ago that things were becoming less and less comfortable there. The political situation there was becoming increasingly complex, and the US Africa Command was quite pragmatic in starting to look at alternatives”.

“The challenges that arise are how long it takes to get from this base to points of conflict or competition. That’s an important factor,” Reed continued. – “We also need to build co-operation with local authorities, and that’s also an important factor.”
