European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Ukraine could join the EU before 2030 if it continues its reform process. Von der Leyen emphasized that Ukraine has made significant progress in recent years and strengthened its democratic institutions.
Von der Leyen said, “Ukraine has taken important steps in its EU accession process. If reforms continue, it has a chance to join the union before 2030.” The EU Commission President underlined the need for progress, especially in the areas of anti-corruption, rule of law and economic reforms. Ukraine accelerated its EU accession process after Russia’s invasion in 2022. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has often expressed his country’s determination to achieve its goal of EU membership. Despite the acceleration of Ukraine’s accession process, EU officials emphasize that the criteria for membership must be fully met. Von der Leyen said, “Ukraine’s accession to the EU will be a historic step for both Ukraine and the EU. However, this process depends on the completion of reforms.” Ukraine’s accession process to the EU is causing controversy both within the country and in EU member states. While some EU countries are concerned about the impact of Ukraine’s accession on the union, others point to Ukraine’s strategic importance. Von der Leyen stated that Ukraine’s accession process to the EU is critical for both Ukraine’s stability and Europe’s security and said, “Ukraine’s accession to the EU will be a big step for the future of Europe.”.
