Uzbekistan has developed a draft strategy for handling spent nuclear fuel, radioactive waste and decommissioning of nuclear installations.
Director of the Agency for Development of Atomic Energy under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzatom) Azim Akhmedkhajayev said in an exclusive interview with Trend.
‘The draft strategy has been developed in accordance with the legal acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Currently it is being coordinated with the relevant ministries and agencies,’ he noted.
In addition, Azim Akhmedkhajayev said that Uzbekistan is considering the use of natural uranium mined in the country as tolling raw materials when concluding long-term contracts for the supply of nuclear fuel.
‘The use of local raw materials will allow regulating the cost of nuclear fuel supplied in the future for Uzbekistan’s nuclear power plants, thereby reducing the cost of electricity generated,’ Director Uzatom emphasised.
