The United States is in talks with the Niger authorities to finalise the withdrawal of US troops from the territory of this African country.
According to the report, this statement was made by Molly Fee, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs at the State Department, at a hearing in the House of Representatives of the US Congress.
Fee noted that Pentagon representatives are currently in Niamey, the capital of Niger.
‘We are currently working with the National Council for the Defence of the Homeland (Niger – ed.) on the withdrawal of US troops. These talks are currently ongoing,’ he said.
The United States announced in April that it would begin discussing plans for an ‘orderly and responsible withdrawal’ after Niger officials announced the cancellation of a military cooperation agreement with Washington. US officials have continued to consult with the African country on the terms of the withdrawal and have discussed the possibility of some US troops remaining in the state.
The troops will be sent to other countries in the region, where they will be able to continue operations, Politico reported, citing sources.
