Turkish Grand National Assembly to discuss the Intergovernmental Gas Cooperation Agreement with Azerbaijan

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) has taken up the draft law ratifying the “Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in the Gas Sector” signed between Turkey and Azerbaijan. Parliament Chairman Numan Kurtulmuş approved the discussion of the bill.The agreement was signed in Istanbul on May 14, 2024 and aims to increase cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector. The TGNA Foreign Relations Committee examined the agreement and prepared a report on January 16. The report highlighted successful energy projects such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline, the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) and the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline. The report also emphasized Azerbaijan’s important role in meeting Turkey’s energy needs and its contribution to strengthening Ankara’s position in regional energy security. The agreement is also critical for the diversification of energy supply sources for Turkey and European countries and gas supply to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. It also includes joint investments between Baku and Ankara in the energy sector.
