The transition team of US President-elect Donald Trump intends to withdraw the US from the World Health Organisation (WHO) from the first day of the new administration on January 20.

According to Report, this is reported by the Financial Times newspaper, citing sources.

The publication notes that this decision will deprive the WHO of its largest source of funding and subsequently affect the organisation’s ability to respond to public health crises such as the coronavirus pandemic.

‘America will leave a huge vacuum in global health funding and leadership. I don’t see anyone who can fill that gap,’ the FT quotes Lawrence Gostin, a professor of global health at Georgetown Law School, as saying.

Recall that in 2020, Trump had already initiated the process of withdrawal from the WHO because of the spread of the coronavirus, accusing the organisation of being controlled by China. But this process was never completed, and his successor Joe Biden renewed relations with the WHO on his first day in office in 2021.
