The Donald Trump administration is preparing to shut down the US Agency for International Development (USAID) following talks between the President and his billionaire advisor Elon Musk.

In a live session on X Spaces on Monday morning, Musk said, “I spoke to the President in detail about USAID. He agreed that we should shut it down.” According to a current and former US official, two top USAID security officers, John Voorhees and his deputy Brian McGill, were placed on leave after Musk refused to grant the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) access to classified materials. Trump defended the move, saying, “It’s run by a bunch of radical crazies. And we’re kicking them out.” “We have to do everything we can to protect people from harm and push them back,” Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren said, arguing that Trump allowed Musk access to personal information and cut off government funding. Experts say that if USAID aid is cut, many European countries and the American middle class will suffer.
