President of Kazakhstan Kassym Generous Tokayev received Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Sergey Shoigu in the capital Astana. During the meeting, important issues on the regional and international agenda, especially security and defense cooperation between the two countries, were discussed.Tokayev noted that the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Russia remains strong and stressed that cooperation, especially in the field of security and defense, serves the interests of both countries. He also stated that the two countries carry out joint work in areas such as counter-terrorism, border security and cyber security. Sergey Shoigu said that Russia attaches great importance to its relations with Kazakhstan and that this cooperation contributes to regional stability and security. Shoigu said that the work carried out within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) should be further developed. The latest situation in Afghanistan and security risks in the region were also discussed. The two sides agreed on the need for a common position against the threats posed to the Central Asian region by instability in Afghanistan. Tokayev and Shoigu said that in the future they will continue to work on further expansion of cooperation in the field of security and defense and the implementation of new projects.
