After the termination of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, member states of the European Union (EU) have purchased a record amount of Russian LNG (liquefied natural gas). This was reported by Bloomberg agency.

It is noted that the volume of delivered LNG has already exceeded the figures recorded until 1 January 2025. In addition, in 2024, Russia delivered a record 15.5 tonnes of LNG to the EU.

‘Europe will still need gas, as all its efforts to wean itself off Russian gas have failed. It will probably end up having to buy more Russian LNG to compensate for the drop in natural gas imports from Russia,’ economist Tatyana Orlova said.

On the morning of 1 January, it became known that Gazprom stopped supplying Russian gas through Ukraine, as the agreement for the transit of fuel, which had been in effect since 30 December 2019, had expired. Following this, the price of gas rose to its highest level in more than a year at stock exchanges in Europe.
