EC: no energy price hikes in the EU after Russian gas supplies cut off
The European Commission (EC) is closely monitoring the situation and has not observed any energy price hikes in the European Union after the termination of Russian gas supplies via Ukraine, a spokeswoman for the European Commission (EC) has said at a press conference in Brussels. This was announced by the EC representative Anna-Kaisa Itkonen at a press conference in Brussels, TASS reports.
‘We have not seen price hikes in the new year, the market remains stable,’ she said.
Itkonen emphasised that the EC is closely monitoring the pricing situation. The spokeswoman added that an emergency group had been set up in the European Commission to prepare for the termination of the agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.
According to Itkonen, this group held a meeting, summarised the results and concluded that there were no concerns about the EU’s energy security.
On 2 January, it was reported that the price of gas in Europe soared to its highest since October 2023 after the cessation of transit through Ukraine. Moldova was the first country to suffer from the stoppage of supplies, while in Transdniestria almost all enterprises were shut down.
