NATO member states must increase defence spending, 2% of GDP is no longer enough to ensure the alliance’s security.
In his farewell speech in Brussels, outgoing NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, according to the Report
‘The good news is that we have fulfilled the promise we made 10 years ago (to spend 2% of GDP on defence – ed.). But the bad news is that this is no longer enough to ensure our security,’ he said.
According to Stoltenberg, NATO countries must be ready to ‘pay the price for peace’.
‘The more money, the stronger defence, the more effective deterrence, the higher security,’ he added.
Asked exactly how much defence spending should be, Stoltenberg said: ‘Every ally has to calculate the price, but it is clear that it is much more than 2% of GDP.’
The Secretary-General emphasised that the alliance leaders should explain to the people why more needs to be paid.
‘The task of the leaders is to explain why this is necessary, why it is important to take these difficult decisions. Because without peace and security there is nothing,’ he added.
