Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo has threatened to veto the European Union’s (EU) aid to Ukraine if the republic does not resume the transit of Russian gas through its territory.

‘If Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky decides to damage the entire EU for purely political reasons, I say on behalf of the Slovak government that the next time the issue of aid to Ukraine is on the table, I will veto it,’ Fitzo said.

He also confirmed that Slovakia might stop humanitarian aid, as well as change the procedure for paying allowances to Ukrainian refugees living on its territory or stop emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine.

Earlier, the Slovak prime minister said that stopping gas transit through Ukraine hurts the EU financially and helps the USA. Fitzo also promised that he would do everything to awaken the European Commission ‘from its sweet sleep’ at the talks in Belgium. He emphasised that Zielenski’s decision led to a ‘serious problem’, which is estimated at tens of billions of euros.
