Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has not ruled out holding a referendum on the country’s accession to BRICS.
According to Report, the head of state made the statement on the air of Radio and Television of Serbia.
According to him, the popularity rating of BRICS in Serbia has reached 42%, the topic will become one of the key issues in the republic in the next two years and may require a referendum
‘A few days ago I looked at what people in Serbia think about this issue. The popularity of BRICS in Serbia is now at around 42 per cent. I think that the discussion of this issue, even though it will not please many people, will be very serious in a year and a half or two years in this country. <…> I do not exclude the possibility that in some elections, when a new president will be chosen in two and a half years, this will be one of the key topics. Who knows, maybe even a topic for a referendum,’ Vucic said.
It should be reminded that on July 3, ‘Joint Declaration on Establishing Strategic Partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People’s Republic of China’ was adopted within the framework of the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Astana. According to paragraph 4.5 of the declaration, the Azerbaijani side expressed its desire to join BRICS, while the Chinese side welcomed Azerbaijan’s participation in BRICS co-operation.
In late August, the Foreign Ministry said that Azerbaijan had submitted an official application to join the association.
