German Chancellor Olaf Scholz conveyed Germany’s support for Moldova’s accession to the European Union (EU) to Moldovan officials.
Scholz made this statement at a joint press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Chisinau, Report reported.
‘We support Moldova on its path to the European Union. It is very important for us that this decision has been taken and we have worked hard to make it possible. We have a positive attitude towards the enlargement of the European Union. We believe that it is time for some countries to finalise the accession processes that have been initiated for a long time.’
The Chancellor emphasised that Germany is one of the countries actively supporting Moldova ‘in fulfilling all these tasks and accelerating the accession process’.
Sandu said that Moldova had delayed its accession to the European family for too long, but now, with the support of EU partners, decisive steps were being taken in this process.
‘Germany is playing a key role in supporting Moldova on this path and we appreciate this,’ Sandu said.
Scholz’s visit to Chisinau coincides with the start of the presidential election campaign. Sandu announced his intention to run for a second term in late 2023 and proposed organising a referendum on EU membership on election day, the results of which would be incorporated into the constitution.
