South Korea and the United States highlighted the importance of the Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) as a “solid” foundation for integrated deterrence efforts.
During the fourth NCG session in Washington, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening U.S.-ROK extended deterrence cooperation. “The NCG is an enduring bilateral consultative body tailored to the U.S.-ROK alliance,” a joint statement read.
Launched in July 2023 as part of the Washington Declaration by Presidents Yoon Suk Yeol and Joe Biden, the NCG aims to enhance the credibility of America’s extended deterrence commitment to defend its ally using all available military capabilities.
At the session, the U.S. reaffirmed its “ironclad” security commitment to South Korea, warning that any nuclear attack by North Korea would provoke a “swift, overwhelming, and decisive response.” Both nations agreed to continue conventional and nuclear integration drills and enhance the visibility of U.S. strategic assets on the Korean Peninsula.
The next NCG session is scheduled for South Korea in the first half of this year.
