Russia calls for reforming international institutes of global governance for their bigger efficiency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

“Serious, qualitative changes are needed in other institutes of global governance, if we want them to work for the good of all,” Lavrov, who is currently the president of the UN Security Council, said during ministerial debates. “First of all, this applies to our organization, which, despite everything, is an epitome of multilateralism, enjoys a unique, universal legitimacy and generally recognized broad competences.”

According to Lavrov, all of the UN members should reiterate their commitment to all the provisions of the organization’s charter as a step toward boosting its efficiency.

He stressed that a key element of the UN reform is changing of its Security Council. “However, this cannot ensure productive work unless there is a basic accord about the methods of activity among the permanent members,” he said, adding that it is also necessary to balance geographical and geopolitical aspects in the Security Council, where countries of the collective West apparently prevail.
