Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump have held a telephone conversation on resolving the current conflict in Ukraine. According to the Kremlin Press Service, the two leaders discussed the seriousness of the situation in Ukraine and discussed possible steps for a peaceful settlement.
During the conversation, Putin and Trump emphasized the importance of diplomatic means and agreed that the current crisis can only be brought to an end through negotiations. Diplomatic efforts should be stepped up to prevent the war from causing more human casualties and to restore stability in the region, they said. The leaders also exchanged views on how a possible peace process could be carried out, in particular on what role the international community could play in this process. Trump emphasized the importance of bringing the parties to the negotiating table, while Putin argued that Western countries’ military aid to Ukraine was undermining the peace talks. Putin and Trump also agreed to hold a face-to-face meeting in the future. While no definite decision has been made on when and where this meeting will take place, it was stated that the parties are willing to continue their diplomatic contacts.
