North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced at a key ruling party meeting that the country will adopt “the toughest anti-U.S. counteraction” strategy, state media reported Sunday.

The United States “is the most reactionary state that regards anti-communism as its invariable state policy,” Kim said, pledging to take a hard-line approach to protect North Korea’s interests and security. He also stated that the alliance between the United States, Japan, and South Korea “has expanded into a nuclear military bloc for aggression,” according to the Korean Central News Agency.

“This reality clearly shows the direction we should take, what we need to do, and how we should act,” Kim said, expressing a desire to strengthen ties with “friendly countries.”

No direct mention was made of Pyongyang’s nuclear development program or spy satellite launches.

The Central Committee meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, presided over by Kim, ran from last Monday through Friday and preceded U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in January.

The meeting reviewed policies from 2024 and discussed plans for the upcoming year. Kim ordered the intensification of military research “to meet the demands and features of modern warfare,” according to the report, which also noted the deployment of North Korean troops to support Russia in its war against Ukraine.
