Germany spends two per cent of GDP on defence, but all NATO countries should invest more, Mark Rutte said after a meeting with the German chancellor. The NATO secretary general referred to Russia’s ‘hybrid attacks.’

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has called on Germany to increase its defence spending. Germany is spending two per cent of its gross domestic product on defence for the first time in thirty years, but all North Atlantic Alliance member states should invest more, Rutte said at a press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin on Monday, November 4.

‘I believe that Germany will continue to step up its efforts,’ the NATO secretary-general emphasised. According to the alliance, Berlin has estimated its defence spending at 90.6 billion euros this year.

Spending on national defence and on assistance to Ukraine is vital ‘for our collective security’, Rutte pointed out. As a former prime minister of the Netherlands, he recognised that governments sometimes struggle to find funds for these purposes.
