The main opposition Deocratic Party (DP) submitted an impeachment motion against Acting President Han Duck-soo and presented it during a parliamentary plenary session on Thursday.
The motion comes after Han announced he would not appoint justices to the Constitutional Court until rival political parties reach a compromise.
The DP has pledged to pursue Han’s impeachment unless he proceeds with the appointments, as the opposition-controlled National Assembly had already approved a motion consenting to three justice nominees. A majority of lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party boycotted the vote.
If appointed, the three nominees would complete the Constitutional Court’s nine-member bench, enabling it to deliberate President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment trial. By law, at least six votes are required to uphold an impeachment motion.
The DP has scheduled the impeachment motion for a vote during a plenary session on Friday. According to parliamentary regulations, an impeachment motion must be voted on between 24 and 72 hours after being reported to a plenary session.
The DP cited five reasons for seeking Han’s impeachment, including alleged collusion with and support for President Yoon’s failed martial law declaration and his refusal to appoint Constitutional Court justices.
