The Hungarian authorities may file a lawsuit against the European Commission (EC) to recover the costs of protecting the community’s external borders of about 2 billion euros.
This statement was made by Gergay Guillasz, head of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office, the Report reported, citing TASS.
‘We are ready to file a lawsuit against the European Commission, which partially or fully reimburses other EU member states for the protection of Schengen borders. Hungary has spent $2bn on Schengen border security in recent years without receiving any significant help from the EU,’ he said.
He said Germany’s decision on 9 September to introduce additional controls at state borders was hindering free movement within the EU.
‘First they did damage by not allowing EU countries to effectively defend external borders. Now they are destroying [the community] by imposing restrictions on internal borders,’ he said.
