A state of emergency has been declared in Kenya due to anti-government protests.

This decision was contained in a decree issued by Chief Secretary of Defense Aden Bare Duale and published in the government’s Kenya Gazette, Report reported.

“The Kenya Defense Forces are hereby deployed on 25 June 2024 to support the police force in response to the security emergency caused by the violent protests that have continued across Kenya, leading to the destruction of infrastructure,” the document said.

NetBlocks has previously recorded internet outages in Kenya, as well as in neighboring countries such as Uganda and Burundi.

Protests against the introduction of additional taxes in Kenya began on June 18 and spread across the country. Rallies are being organized in the capital and other major cities. Participants in the demonstrations say the innovation will hurt the economy and increase the cost of living.

The situation in Nairobi escalated on Tuesday when protesters broke into parliament and set fire to the Nairobi City Council building.
