Kazakhstan, China and Uzbekistan agree on cooperation in the field of water resources

Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov said at a meeting of the country’s government that the signing of an agreement on the development of water resources with China and Uzbekistan is a necessary step for the development of interstate relations.

According to Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, it is planned to sign agreements on joint management and utilisation of transboundary water bodies between the governments of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, as well as agreements on water allocation in transboundary rivers between Kazakhstan and China. The meeting emphasised the importance and necessity of developing international cooperation in the field of water and energy complex.

The Minister also recalled the draft law on ratification of the Convention on the Right to Use International Watercourses for Non-Transportation Purposes submitted to the Senate of Kazakhstan. Nurzhigitov noted that the agreement was signed by thirty-seven countries, of which only Uzbekistan is a neighbour of Kazakhstan.
