Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that Russia is militarily invincible, while Ukraine relies on Western allies to at least avoid losing the war.
Astana supports peace talks to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict but does not insist on mediating the process, Tokayev said. “Since the start of the hostilities, we have supported negotiations for peace. While we don’t insist on mediation, Kazakhstan is always ready to contribute to solving international problems,” he added.
Tokayev also revealed that he discussed the Ukraine conflict with Donald Trump in 2024, when Trump was President-elect of the US. “During our phone call, Trump expressed interest in our perspective on ending the hostilities in Ukraine. This is not a new topic for me, as many leaders asked me similar questions in 2024,” Tokayev said.
He emphasized the complexity of the issue, stating that its resolution depends on the will of the conflicting parties and Trump’s role as a global leader.
