Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani and his U.S. counterpart, Lloyd Austin, on Tuesday reaffirmed their commitment to advancing trilateral cooperation with South Korea, which has faced political turbulence since last week.

Austin emphasized the importance of trilateral cooperation during his meeting with Nakatani in Tokyo, days after South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol issued a surprise declaration of martial law, causing turmoil in the country’s politics.

Earlier in the day, Austin met with Ishiba. They agreed that the United States and Japan will make efforts to promote defense equipment and technology cooperation while boosting relations with like-minded partners, the government said.
