Japan has pledged to cooperate with Canada’s next prime minister to preserve peace and strengthen unity among G7 countries. Japan will continue to work closely with Canada to maintain peace in the Indo-Pacific and preserve unity among G7 countries at a time when former Canadian central bank governor Mark Carney is set to become Canada’s next prime minister, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said.
Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said the talks with Canada’s future leader will focus on global issues such as the war in Ukraine, climate change and economic stability. “Japan and Canada share common values as members of the G7, and we will continue to work together to uphold these values,” Hayashi said. “We will cooperate with Canada, an important strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific, to maintain and strengthen regional and world peace and stability, and work to ensure the unity of the G7,” Hayashi said at a regular press conference. Canada’s ruling Liberal Party elected Carney as its leader on Sunday, paving the way for him to succeed Justin Trudeau, who announced his decision to step down as prime minister.
