Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani and Indonesian counterpart Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin discussed the potential joint development of a naval ship to enhance maritime security cooperation between the two nations.
According to a Japanese government official, the new vessel could be based on a destroyer model from Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force. Discussions on joint development had been ongoing for several years but were stalled under former President Joko Widodo, whose administration prioritized relocating the national capital from Jakarta in Java to Nusantara in Borneo.
Under Japan’s Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology, the export of destroyers is restricted. However, such restrictions do not apply if the destroyers are jointly developed and manufactured with another nation.
