Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong agreed on Sunday to continue working with the U.S. and India under the Quad framework to ensure stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

In their Washington meeting, Iwaya emphasized the critical role of Japan and Australia in promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific. Both ministers acknowledged the increasingly complex security environment and pledged to enhance “multilayered” collaboration with like-minded nations.

The two diplomats also agreed to deepen bilateral ties in areas such as cybersecurity, economic cooperation, and cultural exchanges. Separately, Iwaya met with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, highlighting shared values and the importance of their countries’ partnership for global peace and prosperity. They agreed to mark 2025 as a year of science and technology cooperation, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Japan-India collaboration in this field.
