Japan, Australia agree to push Quad under Trump’s second presidency

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba welcomed the return of US President Donald Trump to office and expressed his desire to strengthen Japan-US relations. 

In a congratulatory message on the occasion of Trump’s re-inauguration as president, Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his hope for close cooperation to further consolidate the long-standing alliance between the two countries.  In addition, Japan’s new Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya announced plans to visit Washington to attend Trump’s inauguration. He stated that during this visit, he intends to emphasize Japan’s economic contributions and its value in national security as a key ally of the United States. Prime Minister Ishiba’s policies to increase Japan’s defense spending and to make its relationship with the United States more balanced are important for the future of cooperation with the Trump administration.
