Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar described China-India relations as rooted in mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interests, reflecting the current upward trend in bilateral ties. A Chinese analyst highlighted the need for caution and patience to consolidate this momentum.

Speaking at the Nani Palkhivala Memorial Lecture in Mumbai, Jaishankar noted that India-China relations are working to resolve complications arising from the post-2020 border situation. He stressed that while addressing these issues, long-term perspectives on the relationship must also be considered.

Jaishankar emphasized India’s need to prepare for China’s growing capabilities, especially those directly impacting India’s interests. “Overall, India’s approach can be summed up as the three mutuals—mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interests. Bilateral ties can benefit from realizing that what’s at stake is the broader potential of both nations,” he added.

In January, Jaishankar was announced as India’s representative at the US presidential inauguration. According to Reuters, Quad foreign ministers from the US, Japan, India, and Australia are also set to meet.
