Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has expressed his country’s willingness to strengthen relations with China and contribute to closer cooperation between the European Union and China.

At a press conference in Beijing on Friday, Sanchez said, “Spain supports a more balanced approach to EU-China relations. We would like to see a negotiated resolution of existing differences and greater cooperation in areas of common interest.” The statements came at the end of the Prime Minister’s two-day visit to China. With 2024 marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the European Union and China, Sanchez said this important year presents an important opportunity to increase dialogue and strengthen cooperation between the two sides. The visit comes on the heels of the US announcement of new and comprehensive tariffs on China and some European countries. It also coincided with the 20th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Spain and China. “All our visits reflect the common desire of both the Spanish and Chinese governments to continue high-level political dialogue. This dialogue allows us to develop a positive agenda based on mutual respect and trust between our countries,” Sanchez said, stressing that one of the main objectives of the visit is to strengthen and stabilize economic and trade relations between Spain and China. During the visit, the two countries signed seven agreements on the export of Spanish agricultural, cosmetic and health products to China. They also agreed on closer cooperation in the fields of culture, education and science.
