Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba began a four-day visit to Malaysia and Indonesia to enhance defense and economic ties amid growing Chinese influence in the region.

This marks his first bilateral talks outside international meetings, highlighting Japan’s commitment to advancing ties despite the U.S.’s potential reduced presence under President-elect Donald Trump.

Malaysia and Indonesia, crucial maritime powers near vital shipping lanes, are key to global security and share concerns over China’s growing assertiveness.

Ishiba will meet Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Friday to strengthen security cooperation and address stable supply chain efforts with Malaysia, the current ASEAN chair.

On Saturday, Ishiba and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto are expected to sign a deal for Japan’s provision of high-speed patrol boats, with talks focusing on military cooperation and arms transfers.
