The Russian Federation proposed to the United Nations (UN) Security Council a press release condemning the liquidation of Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh, but its adoption was blocked by Britain, the United States and France. This statement was made by Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani. APA quotes RIA Novosti with reference to Gazeta.ru.
Iravani added that at the moment it is necessary to hold the ‘occupying Israeli regime’ responsible for the acts committed.
‘This regime cannot be allowed to escape accountability and consequences for its violations,’ Iravani said.
Iravani also said that the liquidation of Ismail Haniyeh could not have taken place without US intelligence support to Israel.
Haniyeh was eliminated in an Israeli raid in Tehran in the early morning hours of 31 July. Haniyeh was attending the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian in the Iranian capital.
Haniyeh had been the political leader of Hamas since 2017. His three sons were killed in an Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip in April 2024. Hamas confirmed the elimination of the head of its politburo. It noted that the causes and scope of ‘this incident’ are being investigated and that the results of the investigation will be announced later.
