Budapest opposes NATO’s mission in Ukraine but cannot prevent it because the majority of alliance members support it.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban made this statement at a press conference following his meeting with alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Budapest, TASS reported.

The prime minister said that he had brought to the attention of his interlocutor Hungary’s intention not to participate in NATO military operations outside the territory of the alliance, in particular in Ukraine. “But after formulating its position, Hungary had to admit that it did not have the ability and power to change the situation,” Orban said. He explained that most NATO countries took the opposite position, “insisting on other solutions”.

Orban also said he would defend Hungary’s position at the NATO summit in Washington in July.
