UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Thursday that Africa should become a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Guterres made the remarks at the China-Africa Cooperation Forum in Beijing, attended by leaders of more than 50 African countries, Interfax reported.
‘It is outrageous (…) that the African continent still does not have a permanent seat in the Security Council,’ he said. He also emphasised that it was time to correct the ‘historical injustices’ suffered by the continent.
Guterres also pointed to China’s economic achievements, including poverty reduction, and noted that China’s expertise could help ‘significant transformations in the areas of food systems and digital connectivity’.
Currently, the permanent members of the UN Security Council are the Russian Federation, the United States, China, the United Kingdom and France.
