Georgia has announced plans to purchase natural gas and other energy resources from Turkmenistan as part of its strategy to diversify its energy sources. This step was taken after Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, who visited Turkmenistan, met with President Sardar Berdimuhammedov in line with Georgia’s goals of increasing its energy security and expanding its supply sources.
The Georgian Energy Ministry said in a statement that the two countries discussed opportunities for energy cooperation. Turkmenistan’s rich natural gas reserves make it a potential supplier for Georgia. Infrastructure projects and logistics solutions for the transportation of energy resources were also discussed during the talks. In particular, the creation of new routes for energy transportation through the Caspian Sea and increasing the capacity of existing pipelines were emphasized. Turkmenistan is known as one of the countries with the largest natural gas reserves in the world. Georgia’s initiative to purchase energy resources from this country could also contribute to strengthening regional energy cooperation.
