South Korean Trade Minister Cheong In-kyo will travel to Washington later this week for customs negotiations with US government officials. According to a statement from Cheong’s office, the minister will embark on a two-day visit to Washington on Thursday to hold talks on the Donald Trump administration’s new tariff plan.
During his visit, Cheong will discuss strengthening bilateral supply chain cooperation with officials from the Office of the US Trade Representative and other government agencies and emphasize the need to ensure a stable environment for South Korean companies’ investments in the US, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said in a statement. “The ministry will continue discussions on the issues discussed at the bilateral ministerial meeting in February,” Cheong said in a written statement, adding that he will work to advance the interests of both Seoul and Washington. Late last month, Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun met with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and other officials to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in shipbuilding, energy and other sectors. Following this meeting, Seoul and Washington established consultative bodies on customs negotiations, shipbuilding cooperation and energy. South Korea’s participation in the US natural gas pipeline development project in Alaska is also on the agenda.
