SPD co-chairman Klingbeil: Europe needs more determination in relations with Russia
Co-chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) Lars Klingbeil after the EstLink 2 cable between Finland and Estonia was damaged, called for more determination in Europe’s relations with Russia. His words are quoted by Funke.
‘Events show that it is a mistake to think that Russian President Putin is only waging war against Ukraine. Hybrid attacks on critical infrastructure are also on the rise here and across Europe,’ Klingbeil argued
The politician called on the Baltic states to increase vigilance and strengthen the defence of critical infrastructure. According to him, this is the determination that is needed from EU countries.
On 25 December, the Estlink 2 power cable between Estonia and Finland failed in the Baltic Sea. After that, the Finnish border service detained the oil tanker Eagle S, which left St Petersburg, in the Baltic Sea. The Finnish side believes that the vessel is involved in the damage to the cable. It is noted that Finland continues preliminary investigation in connection with a possible aggravated violation of the law.
