G20 summit opens in Brazil

The two-day summit of the Group of Twenty (G20) countries opens in Rio de Janeiro.

The leaders of all G20 countries and a number of other states, including Angola, Bolivia, Qatar, Colombia, Egypt, Malaysia, Nigeria, Singapore and Vietnam, have been invited to the event, Report reports citing foreign media.

Brazil has chosen sustainable development, reform of global governance and institutions including the UN, the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organisation, social inclusion and the fight against hunger as central themes of its presidency. Brazil’s proposed Global Alliance to Fight Hunger and Poverty, which aims to mobilise countries, international organisations and the private sector to take action to guarantee food availability, especially in the most vulnerable regions, is scheduled to be officially launched on 18 November.

Brazil also wants to include in the declaration a call for the peaceful resolution of conflicts, including in Ukraine and the Middle East. ‘This message of the need for peace is not just about a specific conflict, but about all conflicts, which confirms Brazil’s stated priority for global governance reform.
