Slovak PM Fico: MPs will not support Ukraine’s joining NATO
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, head of the Smer-SD (Direction – Social Democracy) party, has assured that MPs from his political force will not support Ukraine’s joining NATO.
‘NATO membership is not obtained so that some collective of people comes and says – you will be there. The ratification of each state is necessary. As long as I am head of the Slovak government, I will direct the MPs that are under my control as chairman of the [ruling Smer] party never to agree to Ukraine’s joining NATO, because its membership would mean “nothing other than a basis for World War III” he said on air on STVR (Slovak Television and Radio) on Sunday.
He noted that Slovakia supported Ukraine’s desire to become a member of the European Union, but Kiev would have to fulfil a large number of conditions for this, which could take years.
