The European Commission (EC) will recommend the start of negotiations with Ukraine on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union in June.

The Financial Times (FT) reported that the European Commission will recommend the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union in June.

According to the newspaper’s sources, the European Commission wants to support Kiev ahead of Hungary’s EU presidency. On 7 June, Ukraine will announce that it meets the criteria necessary to join the community, including anti-corruption measures, restrictions on political lobbying, asset declaration rules for civil servants and protection of languages used by national minorities, the sources said.

Hungary will replace Belgium as temporary president of the Council of the EU on 1 July. Budapest’s mandate will last six months until the end of 2024.
