The European Commission is “actively monitoring” the spread of fake news about the shooting of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

The regulatory agency “has broad investigative and oversight powers, including the right to impose sanctions and remedies,” the statement said.

Offences are punishable under the European Union’s tough new Digital Services Act, which obliges online platforms to take measures to combat illegal content and misinformation, protect users’ rights and safeguard their health and well-being.

Under the Digital Services Act, the bloc last year singled out several online platforms and search engines as large organisations worthy of close scrutiny. These include X, Meta Platforms Inc, Alphabet Inc. And others with more than 45 million monthly active users in Europe.
