The defense chiefs of South Korea and Thailand held talks in Seoul on Thursday to discuss ways to expand arms industry cooperation, Seoul’s defense ministry said.
Defense Minister Shin Won-sik briefed his Thai counterpart, Sutin Klungsang, on South Korean weapons systems and expressed hopes for South Korean defense companies to take part in Thailand’s military modernization project, according to the ministry.
Thailand is currently pushing to make upgrades to its military under a 10-year plan approved in 2017.
Sutin expressed expectations for his trip to help explore opportunities for possible arms industry cooperation, citing his scheduled visits to major defense companies, the ministry said.
South Korea has exported Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd.’s T-50TH jets and a frigate built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, now known as Hanwha Ocean, to Thailand.
