Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has admitted the possibility of adopting new legislation on self-government of Greenland.
As Report reports with reference to Danmarks Radio, she said this while speaking at a press conference during a visit to the capital of the island of Nuuk.
‘I believe we will start more concrete negotiations, and it could be anything from self-government legislation to additional investments in Greenlandic society, from how we deal with the current situation to foreign and security policy in general,’ Frederiksen said.
She also emphasised Denmark’s interest in strengthening security in the Arctic. According to her, the kingdom is already investing a lot of money in this and is ready to co-operate with the US on this issue. But at the same time Frederiksen pointed out that ‘you cannot annex other countries. All the more arguing this on the grounds of international security.’
Note that US President Donald Trump has previously repeatedly said that Greenland should join his country. He threatened to impose high trade duties against Denmark if it did not give up the island. Back during his first term as president, Trump offered to buy Greenland. Danish and Greenlandic authorities rejected the idea.
