In a telephone conversation, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that China-Russia relations are on a long-term and strategic basis and will not be affected by external factors.
Putin shared with Xi the latest contacts with the United States and Russia’s position on the Ukraine crisis. He said Moscow was determined to address the root causes of the crisis and achieve lasting peace. Xi, for his part, said that China supports a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis and cooperates with the countries of the Global South in this regard. While the meeting coincided with the third anniversary of the Russian-Ukrainian war, it is known that Russian and US officials recently continued talks on the Ukrainian crisis in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that China has been in contact with relevant parties since the beginning of the crisis and has made efforts to lay the groundwork for peace negotiations. The two leaders emphasized China and Russia’s historical friendship and noted that the two countries are pursuing long-term development and cooperation goals. Putin said that Russia aims to increase high-level contacts with China, especially to jointly commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in 2025.
The meeting followed a recent meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting. The two ministers said that China-Russia friendship is “unshakable” and that strategic coordination will be deepened.
