Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that Beijing is ready to work with Lisbon to build a more stable, productive and dynamic bilateral relationship and promote China-EU relations as a strategic partnership based on mutual trust and common achievement.

Wang Yi made the remarks while co-chairing the second China-Portugal strategic dialogue at the foreign ministerial level with Portuguese Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel in Beijing. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the China-Portugal comprehensive strategic partnership and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union. Wang noted that the long-standing mutual respect and support between China and Portugal is the fundamental reason and political assurance for the long-term stability and development of bilateral relations. Wang Yi emphasized that China has set an annual growth target of about 5% and is committed to gradually expanding its institutional openness, as well as steadily advancing autonomous and unilateral opening-up. Chinese modernization is based on mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, which opens up greater opportunities not only for Portugal but also for the whole world, Wang said. Portugal remains one of the EU countries with the highest Chinese investment per capita. Wang called for expanding cooperation and strengthening people-to-people exchanges in key areas such as project investment, green transformation, digital economy, innovation and research, information and communication. He also added that Macau should continue to play a bridge role so that bilateral relations can deepen significantly.
