China and Indonesia pledged to make joint efforts to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea, expand security cooperation and safeguard the multilateral trading system. These statements were made at the first “2+2” dialogue between the foreign and defense ministers of the two countries.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defense Minister Dong Jun and Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin attended the meeting in Beijing. The meeting is historic as it is the first such dialog mechanism that China has held with another country. Making a press statement after the meeting, Wang Yi said that the two countries aim to jointly maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea and set an example in maritime cooperation. He also announced the signing of a maritime security cooperation agreement between the coast guard agencies of the two countries. The two sides reiterated their commitment to the full and effective implementation of the South China Sea Declaration on the Conduct of Parties and agreed to accelerate discussions on the Code of Conduct. Wang Yi also pointed out that China and Indonesia are each other’s largest trading partners, and all forms of unilateralism and trade protectionism should be opposed. “The abuse of tariffs seriously undermines normal trade exchanges between countries. We are committed to promoting regional economic integration, securing supply chains and defending the legitimate rights of the Global South,” he said.
