China and Brazil are determined to defend the multilateral system in areas such as trade and climate change. They believe multilateralism is the most effective way to solve international problems, said COP30 Conference President Andre Aranha Correa do Lago.

“COP30 should reinforce the idea that only through dialogue and multilateralism can we solve problems between countries,” Correa do Lago told a press conference in Beijing on Friday in response to growing protectionist tendencies. During a five-day visit to China that began on Monday, the veteran climate diplomat met with officials from China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment and Liu Zhenmin, China’s special envoy on climate change, to discuss the climate crisis challenges facing countries and the prospects for COP30. The COP30 Climate Summit is scheduled to take place in Brazil in November. According to Correa do Lago, the main agenda items will be financing and technology.

Within the scope of the preparations for COP30, Correa do Lago stated that he aims to carry the idea that the fight against climate change can be economically viable and extremely beneficial to the countries of the world, and stated that China is an important example in this regard. He said that China is contributing to both the environment and the economy by focusing on climate-friendly technologies such as electric vehicles and solar panels. Correa do Lago also recognized China as a central actor in the climate negotiations and emphasized that Brazil and China have been working closely for many years, including on multilateral platforms such as BRICS.
