Chinese diplomats are reportedly considering joining a “coalition of the willing” of countries willing to send troops to keep the peace in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire with Russia. This was reported by the Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Saturday, March 22.

Diplomatic sources in the European Union said that China’s possible participation in this coalition could persuade Russia to accept the presence of foreign peacekeepers in Ukraine. The issue is “sensitive”, the sources told Welt am Sonntag. However, there has been no official statement from the Chinese authorities on this issue yet. The leaders of France and the United Kingdom first raised the possibility of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine. On March 17, a representative of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that more than 30 countries had expressed interest in joining the initiative. “A significant number of countries will send troops and many others will contribute in different ways,” the British official said. The Times newspaper listed the United Kingdom, France, Turkey, Turkey, Canada and Australia as potential participants. It said up to 30,000 troops could be sent to Ukraine, while other countries in the coalition would provide “arms and logistical support”.
