China is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with the international community, especially with the European Union (EU), seize development opportunities, expand open cooperation and achieve mutual benefits, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said.
These efforts are aimed at not only safeguarding the interests of China and the EU, but also jointly defending international trade rules, justice and fairness, Lin said at a daily press conference on Monday. Lin’s remarks follow a recent increase in high-level contacts between China and the EU. The world community has been closely following the global impact of the widespread tariffs imposed by the US under the Trump administration. “The US is using tariffs as a tool of pressure, putting its own interests ahead of the common interests of the international community. This is a typical example of unilateralism, protectionism and economic bullying, and seriously harms the interests of many countries, including China and the EU,” Lin said: “China and the EU are the second and third largest actors in the global economy. Their combined economic output accounts for more than one-third of the world economy and their trade volumes exceed one-quarter of global trade.” Lin stressed that both sides are in favor of economic globalization and trade liberalization and are staunch advocates of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
